And just like that, the summer is almost over. The two big children have gone back to school, the Aga is back on and the animals are getting a little bit fluffy with the start of their winter coats. We have some great offers for our local customers, including:

2 packs of two steaks - sirloin/rump as available; 1 x 500g (approx) beef strips for stir fries (or biltong!); 4 x 500g (approx) minced beef.

This is one of the busiest times of year for us. But for a few stragglers, the calves have all arrived, and the bulls are running with the ladies. The long days means the chickens are heading towards peak egg production, and we’re keeping a close eye on the weather so we can get the best conditions for making hay and silage from our grass and herbal ley fields. As a multi-generational family we’re also juggling having the children at home all the time, alon...

Ah the beef burger. There are almost as many recipes for burgers as there are burgers themselves. But here at the Slow Farming Company we think we've cracked it. The burger of dreams. Which isn't to say it's the only burger we cook. Oh no, you don't want to get sick of the burger of dreams. But we do have it on a pretty regular basis. And the little farmers all like it. Which is nothing short of a miracle frankly. So, because we're nothing if not caring and...

These offers are available for a limited time only.

These beautiful Weck jar candles from The Botanical Company, which was set up just over the border in Dorset in 2015, and is all round fabulous. They use only soy wax as it's entirely natural, along with either 100% essential oils or high quality perfume oils and cotton core wicks. Not only are these candles good for your eco credentials – they also use absolutely minimal plastic throughout the process – but they also smell amazing. It’s a rare day when we...

Hurrah for apple season, and for the need to wear more layers to hide the cake you’re entirely justified in eating in a bid to keep warm. Mentions of Indian Summers will be glossed over. I recently discovered this recipe in Well Seasoned: Exploring Cooking and Eating with the Seasons by Russell Brown and Jonathan Haley, which was published earlier this year. I have modified it a bit, to make it more of a cake and less of a pudding. It’s got a few stages, bu...

(Photo borrowed from Matt's Facebook page as I was too impatient to get to my supper to take one!)

As someone who went to school in Bruton more years ago that I would care to remember, at a time when the town wasn’t considered entirely safe after dark, I am more than a little thrilled by the change in fortunes it has experienced over the last few years. It is now a regular haunt for London’s cool kids (except I’m sure they’re not called that) who want to es...

Autumn. Like so many people, this really is my favourite time of year. Frosty mornings, thick socks, stews and fires. The oldest of our children has started his second year of primary school, with great enthusiasm and a new pair of very cool glasses. Our elder daughter has just started at nursery – a day she has been looking forward to for months. Our younger daughter is approaching six months old, and the introduction of solids – the time I am especially g...

*it is possible we are biased.

In recent years the farming business at Clanville Manor Farm has begun moving over to a regenerative agricultural system. We are working towards a holistic way to minimise the reliance on external inputs, including fertilisers, chemical sprays and antibiotics, whilst improving carbon capture and soil fertility.

This centres on a grass based diet for all animals on the farm, including the long standing beef herd, and the introduc...

One of the comments we get a lot is "I'd love to buy a box of your amazing beef, but I couldn't possibly store it all". I thought it might be helpful to actually put the contents of a 5kg box in my freezer and show you what it looks like, so you can see exactly how much room it takes up. The  drawer below is 40cm x 43cm x 13cm and from a standard under the counter freezer. As you can see it easily fits in, with room to spare for some frozen peas. A 5kg box...
